The Introvert’s Creative Solitude

My first few courses back to school did not fuel my creative spirit. I joke that years of analytical and research paper writing siphoned the pretty “fluff” of composition from my prefrontal cortex. When I read books from my friends, the imagery is astounding and it places me directly into the settings of their stories.

In my Behavioral Health course, I’ve been writing short papers on my experiences and how those relate to what’s taught. I enjoy the TED Talks too. When I finished this extra credit opportunity, I shared my words with close friends. Now I want to share those words with you.

I’m an introvert. I thrive in quiet moments where my inspiration blossoms into ideas and visions. My hobbies are typical of others who require time alone with their thoughts and passions. I write, draw, paint, read, and garden. Soon, I’ll learn to play the piano. Also, I enjoy attending concerts, brunch with friends, and monster truck shows with my dad and brother. I appreciate Susan Cain’s persuasion for schools and employers to allow individuals to freely think separately and to come together to work on a solution (Cain, 2012). We need smaller gatherings and earlier departure times.

To include introverts, allow breaks where we can have a few moments to observe our five senses. This grounds us and helps introverts to feel at peace and aware of our surroundings. My favorite thing to do and my best self-care activity in the warmer seasons is to sit on my swing in the backyard and listen. I hear nature’s songs, feel the gentle breeze, and the sun’s warmth. I also, write and journal on my swing. Sometimes, I do nothing but watch. I watch the squirrels chase each other away from the bird feeder. I watch how the cardinals and orioles return when the space is clear.

The magic happens when I come back inside. I write without pausing. It flows naturally and I can’t wait to share it on social media. That state of open creativity is my confident, creative, happy place. Please let us introverts have our silent moments. We hear our soul’s voice.
